Description
Julius Caesar, Silver Denarius (49 BC)
Struck by a mobile military mint traveling with Caesar at the outbreak of the Roman Civil War, this denarius is one of the most iconic coins of the late Roman Republic. The obverse shows an elephant advancing right, trampling a horned serpent, with the inscription CAESAR below. The imagery is widely interpreted as a symbol of Caesar’s power and virtue overcoming evil or chaos, possibly alluding to his victories over Rome’s enemies or to religious symbolism familiar to Roman audiences. Notably, this issue was among the first Roman coins to prominently display Caesar’s name alone, signaling his unprecedented personal authority during the march on Rome after crossing the Rubicon.
