Trajan Sestertius, 98-117. 25.67 g. Obverse legend IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM P M encircles a laureate head facing right, sharply struck with full facial detail. Reverse legend TR POT COS IIII P P above, S C in exergue, shows Concordia seated left, emptying a patera over a lighted altar while holding a double cornucopiae; central devices appear in high relief within a broad flan. Surfaces generally dark olive to brown with occasional red highlights from even patination; minor die-flow lines visible. Reference: RIC II Trajan 430.
Issued early in Trajan's principate, the Concordia sestertius publicised the emperor's aspiration for social harmony following the transition from Nerva. Concordia's iconography underscored Trajan's presentation as a provident, pious ruler distributing grain and favour. Large bronze coinage like this functioned in daily transactions and acted as a circulating billboard for imperial messages across the empire.
