Nero, tetradrachm, AR, reign 54–68 AD, Alexandria (Egypt), regnal year 12 = 65/6 AD, 12.11 g, 24 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Nero right; Greek imperial titulature around, ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ. Reverse with eagle standing left on thunderbolt, holding wreath in beak; ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ in legend and regnal date L ΙΒ in field. RPC I 5289.
Alexandrian tetradrachms formed the principal large-denomination currency of Roman Egypt and were struck to a local standard distinct from the silver coinage circulating elsewhere in the empire. The use of Greek legends and regnal dating, here Year 12 (65/6 AD), reflects the administrative continuity of Egypt’s monetary system under Roman rule while presenting the emperor’s portrait and titulature for provincial circulation during Nero’s reign.
