Description

Probus, antoninianus, billon (BI), AD 276–282, Tripolis mint, 4.11 g, 23 mm. Obverse with legend IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust of Probus right. Reverse with legend CLEMENTIA TEMP, personification of Clementia depicted standing, holding attributes associated with clemency and authority. Struck from engraved dies on the typical antoninianus flan of the period. RIC V (Probus) 928.

Probus came to power during the third-century imperial crises and is documented for sustained military activity on multiple frontiers, efforts to reassert central authority, and the restoration of stability after rapid successions of emperors. Issues from the Tripolis mint reflect the geographic breadth of imperial coin production in this period and served as official media for disseminating imperial messages; the reverse legend CLEMENTIA TEMP belongs to a series of types promoting the emperor’s policy of restraint and orderly government as part of wider consolidation after years of civil conflict.
