Description
Probus, antoninianus, billon, AD 276–282, Siscia mint, 4.61 g, 22 mm. Obverse with radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, legend IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG. Reverse with Clementia standing left, extending right hand and holding sceptre, legend CLEMENTIA TEMP. RIC V (Probus) 644.
The CLEMENTIA TEMP reverse type belongs to the imperial messaging of Probus’ reign, which emphasized restoration of order and stability after the crises of the mid-third century; personifications such as Clementia were used on coinage to communicate the emperor’s intended policies and the return of disciplined government across the provinces, including the Danubian region served by the Siscia mint.
