Description

Trebonianus Gallus, antoninianus, silver, AD 251–253, Antioch mint, AD 251–253. 4.15 g, 22 mm. Obverse with laureate-radiate imperial portrait right, surrounded by the legend IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG. Reverse type and legend not recorded in the provided data; the piece is attributed to the Antioch issue catalogued as RIC IV Trebonianus Gallus 80. Struck in the name of Trebonianus Gallus during his joint rule in the mid-third century, on a flan consistent with the antoninianus module. RIC IV Trebonianus Gallus 80.

Issued during the crisis years following the death of Decius, Trebonianus Gallus’s antoniniani reflect the continuing reliance on the radiate-denarius tariffed coinage as the principal medium for military and state payments despite ongoing debasement and inflation; the Antioch mint was a key eastern imperial facility supplying coin for frontier defense and administration during a period marked by renewed Gothic pressure, internal instability, and the outbreak of the so-called Plague of Cyprian.
