Description

Aurelian, antoninianus, billon, AD 270–275, Antioch mint, 4.93 g, 23 mm. Obverse: radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; legend IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG. Reverse: Sol standing left, raising right hand and holding globe; legend SOLI INVICTO. Struck on a billon flan with full principal types and legible legends. RIC V (Aurelian) 390.

Issued during Aurelian’s reign in the aftermath of the mid-3rd-century political and military crises, this antoninianus reflects the emperor’s program of restoration and consolidation across the empire. The reverse dedication to Sol Invictus documents the prominence of the solar cult under Aurelian, associated with imperial legitimacy and unity, while the Antioch mint underscores the strategic and administrative importance of the eastern provinces during ongoing frontier pressures and internal reorganization.
