Description

A silver hemidrachm from Chersonesos in Thrace (modern Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey) of around 350 BC is a small but iconic Classical Greek coin known for its distinctive artistic style and symbolic reverse.

Obverse

Forepart of a lion, depicted in a dynamic pose.

The lion’s body faces forward, but the head is dramatically reverted backward—an intentionally stylized, almost abstract posture creating curvature that complements the round flan.

Reverse

A quadripartite incuse square composed of alternating raised and sunken quarters.

Two opposing sunken quarters typically contain symbols, often a pellet combined with another emblem such as a grape bunch, helmet, or other mint marks depending on the variety.
