Description
The Silver Obol of Eucratides I, one of the most powerful Greco‑Bactrian kings, reflects the militaristic and Hellenistic character of his reign. These small silver coins typically feature on the obverse a diademed and draped bust of Eucratides, sometimes shown wearing a Boeotian‑style helmet—a symbol of his martial authority. The reverse displays the Caps of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), often accompanied by stars or palm branches and a monogram, consistent with Greek iconography and inscriptions such as BASILEŌS EUKRATIDOU.
These obols were struck in high‑quality silver and circulated widely across Bactria during a period when Eucratides expanded his territory and consolidated power. Their design emphasizes both his royal lineage and heroic associations through the Dioscuri
