Description

Denarius of Domitian, silver, Rome mint, struck 93-94 CE during the thirteenth tribunician year.  3.25 g, 18 mm. Obverse legend IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P XIII encircles a laureate head of the emperor facing right. Reverse legend IMP XXII COS XVI CENS P P P surrounds Minerva standing right upon the capital of a rostral column; she brandishes a spear, holds a shield at her side, and an owl appears at the column's front. Struck in high-relief on a small flan with standard imperial alignment. Surfaces commonly show light cabinet toning of grey with golden highlights. Dies prepared by official engravers exhibit refined lettering and precise portraiture. Reference: RIC II.1² Domitian 761.

Issued during Domitian's vigorous monetary reform phase, the type proclaims his 22nd imperial acclamation and 16th consulship, dating unequivocally to mid-93 CE. The recurring Minerva motif reflects the emperor's personal devotion to the goddess and his presentation as military guardian of Rome. The series illustrates stable silver content after Nero's earlier debasement.
