Description
SICILY, Leontini. Circa 476–466 BC. AR Didrachm
A silver didrachm struck at Leontini in eastern Sicily during the early Classical period.
Obverse: A nude male rider on horseback moving right, typically shown holding a kentron (goad) in the right hand and the reins in the left.
Reverse: A roaring lion’s head facing right, surrounded by four barley grains—an emblem referring both to the city’s name (“lion”) and the agricultural richness of the Leontine plain. The ethnic ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ appears around the design.
