Julia Domna Denarius, silver, dated 196-211 CE, 2.46 g

Julia Domna Denarius, silver, dated 196-211 CE, 2.46 g, 18 mm. Obverse legend IVLIA AVGVSTA shows her draped bust right with elaborately waved hair; field otherwise plain. Reverse legend MATER DEVM depicts the goddess Cybele seated left on a throne between two outward-facing lions, wearing a mural crown, leaning on a tympanum, and holding a branch in her right hand and sceptre in her left. Strike is typically high-relief for the period with centred legends; surface exhibits light silver-grey toning over underlying lustre. Reference: RIC IV Septimius Severus 564.
