Description

Antoninus Pius Fortuna denarius, silver, reign 138-161 CE, struck at Rome 145-161 CE; weight 3.00 g; diameter about 17 mm. Obverse shows laureate head right with legend ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP. Reverse bears legend COS IIII and depicts Fortuna standing left, holding rudder on globe and cornucopia. The issue was produced on well-prepared dies, normally giving sharp details and complete legends; surviving specimens exhibit even grey to light iridescent toning. Standard references include RIC III Antoninus Pius 132 var, BMCRE 536, and RSC 314.

Minted during Antoninus Pius' fourth consulship, the type propagates themes of stability and prosperity by pairing the emperor's portrait with Fortuna's symbols of guidance and plenty. The coin circulated widely in the western provinces, supporting imperial pay and trade, and its consistent fineness illustrates the fiscal continuity that characterised Antoninus Pius' generally peaceful and economically steady reign.
