Description
Alexander III “the Great” Tetradrachm – Tarsos Mint
Struck under Antigonos I Monophthalmos, circa 316–301 BC
A classic post‑Alexander issue produced at Tarsos during the turbulent early Diadochi period, when Antigonos I Monophthalmos controlled Cilicia. These tetradrachms continue the authoritative Alexander type:
Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing the lion‑skin headdress; bold, idealized style typical of late Alexander issues in Asia Minor.
Reverse: Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a throne, holding eagle and scepter; ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ inscription. Often accompanied by distinct Tarsos monograms associated with Antigonos’ administration.
Struck amid Antigonos’s consolidation of power before the Battle of Ipsos, these coins reflect both political legitimacy and monetary continuity. They are prized for their strong artistry, clear iconography, and historical link to the earliest successor‑kingdom struggles.
