Description

Spalirises, square unit, AE, Indo-Scythian ruler, 70–58 BC, uncertain mint, 8.77 g, 20 mm. Obverse depicts the king advancing left, holding a goad and bow. Reverse shows Zeus seated slightly left, extending right hand and holding a scepter in the left, with monogram in the right field. Struck on a square flan; surfaces show typical ancient texture consistent with bronze issues of the series. Reference: Senior 73.1.

Spalirises belongs to the early Indo-Scythian dynasts who established control in regions of northwestern South Asia following the decline of Indo-Greek power. His bronze coinage combines Iranian-steppe rulership with Greek religious imagery, using Zeus as a continuation of Hellenistic iconography within a local monetary fabric; the square flan format reflects Indian minting practice and the adaptation of imported types to regional standards.
