Description

Eucratides I, obol, AR, reign 171–145 BC, Paropamisadai or Gandhara mint, struck circa 171–145 BC, 0.74 g, 11 mm. Obverse with diademed and draped bust right. Reverse with Greek legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ (“of King Eucratides”); reverse type not further specified in the provided data. Struck on a small obol flan, with the legend and devices arranged to the available fabric. Bopearachchi 3E.

Eucratides I was a principal ruler of the Greco-Bactrian kingdom whose issues document the extension of Hellenistic royal titulature and iconographic conventions into the eastern satrapies, including the Paropamisadai and Gandhara regions; small silver denominations such as this obol reflect the monetization of local exchange alongside larger silver and gold, and the continued use of Greek legends signals the administrative and cultural continuity of Greek authority in these frontier territories during the mid-2nd century BC.
