Description

Lysimachos, tetradrachm, AR, 305–281 BC, Lampsakos mint, 16.18 g, 30 mm. Obverse with diademed head of the deified Alexander III right, wearing the horn of Ammon. Reverse with Athena seated left, holding Nike and resting arm on shield, with ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ in the fields. Well-centered strike with clear legends and principal devices; minor die wear consistent with the issue. Thompson, Lysimachus 50.

This tetradrachm belongs to the widely disseminated royal coinage of Lysimachos, one of Alexander the Great’s successors, and employs the deified portrait of Alexander with the Ammon horn to assert legitimacy and continuity with Alexander’s empire. The Lampsakos mint in Mysia was a significant production center for this type, which circulated broadly in the Hellenistic world as a major silver denomination and helped standardize royal iconography and titulature across Lysimachos’ territories.
