Description

Antigonos III Doson, tetradrachm, AR, as regent and king of Macedon, 229–221 BC, Amphipolis mint, in the name of Antigonos II Gonatas, 17.11 g, 30 mm. Obverse with the horned head of Pan left, a lagobolon set over the shoulder, all within the central boss of a Macedonian shield. Reverse with the legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΓΟΝΟΥ, arranged around the standard Macedonian shield device with typical Amphipolitan fabric for the Doson issues struck under the Gonatas name. Well-centered and well-struck for the type, with clear rendering of Pan’s facial features and the shield details; legends legible. References: HGC 3.1, 1042.

Struck during the consolidation of Antigonid power after the instability following Demetrios II, this tetradrachm reflects Antigonos III Doson’s use of established royal types and the continued deployment of the Gonatas royal name in coinage as a legitimizing instrument. The Pan/shield imagery and Macedonian shield format emphasize Macedonian military identity and royal continuity at a time when Doson rebuilt Macedonian influence in Greece and reasserted authority through alliances and successful campaigns.
