Description

Nero, tetradrachm, AR, reign 54–68 AD, Antioch, dated regnal year 11 (64/65 AD), 14.41 g, 25 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Nero right; Greek legend NEPΩN KAIΣAP ΣEBAΣTOY. Reverse with eagle standing facing on thunderbolt, head left, with date in field; legend ETOYΣ AIPoI. Well-centred for the issue with clear legends; struck in billon of the Antiochene tetradrachm series. RPC I 4186.

Antiochene tetradrachms of Nero formed a principal provincial silver denomination for Roman Syria, combining imperial portraiture with long-established regional types such as the eagle on thunderbolt; the dated regnal formula records issue by year and provides a precise chronological marker within Nero’s reign, reflecting the integration of imperial authority into local monetary practice in one of the eastern empire’s major administrative and commercial centres.
