Description
Domitian, As, AE, reign 81–96 AD, Rome mint, struck AD 85–86, 11.51 g, 27 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Domitian right; legend IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XI CENS PER P P. Reverse with Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae; legend MONETA AVGVSTI. Well-centered strike with clear legends and balanced relief on both sides. RIC II (2nd ed.) Domitian 417.
The MONETA AVGVSTI reverse type relates to the imperial administration of the Roman mint and the state’s oversight of coin production, presenting Moneta as a personification of monetary order and reliability; paired with Domitian’s titulature including GERM, COS XI, and CENS PER P P, the issue reflects the emperor’s public projection of authority and institutional control during the mid-80s AD.
