Description
Titus, as Caesar, As, AE, under Vespasian, Lugdunum (Lyon), AD 77–78, 8.7 g, 27 mm. Obverse with bare head of Titus right; legend T CAES IMP AVG F TR P COS VI CENSOR. Reverse with Victoria standing left on prow, holding wreath and palm; legend VICTORIA NAVALIS across fields, S C in exergue. Struck on a broad flan with clear central detail and minor peripheral weakness typical of the issue; brown patina with localized smoothing from circulation. RIC II.1 (Vespasian) 1274.
Issued for Titus while still heir to Vespasian, this provincial Gallic mint as reflects Flavian imperial messaging and the administrative integration of Lugdunum into the empire’s bronze coinage supply. The reverse type VICTORIA NAVALIS invokes Roman sea-victory imagery, a traditional theme used to affirm military success and stability, while the S C formula maintains the formal senatorial sanction expected on imperial aes denominations.
