Description
Parthian Empire, drachm, AR, (circa 1st century BC–1st century AD), Ecbatana mint, 2.67 g, 18 mm. Obverse with diademed and draped bust left, long beard and earring; surrounding legend unreadable from the surviving surfaces. Reverse with the traditional Arsacid type of Archer (Arsakes I) seated right on a throne, holding a bow, with a monogram placed below the bow; reverse legend likewise unreadable. Struck on a compact flan with moderate centering; principal devices clear though legends are largely indistinct, consistent with circulation and/or strike weakness. The seated-archer reverse type is the long-running dynastic emblem of the Arsacid kings, presenting the reigning monarch under the name and imagery of the dynasty’s founder, Arsakes, to emphasize continuity and legitimacy across changing rulers. Issues of Ecbatana reflect the importance of Media and its major urban center within the Parthian imperial system, where silver drachms served as a standard medium for state payments and regional commerce across western Iran and adjoining territories.
