Herennia Etruscilla, 249-251, Antoninianus

Herennia Etruscilla, Antoninianus, AR, Augusta under Trajan Decius, AD 249-251, Rome mint, 3.55 g, 22 mm. Obverse with diademed and draped bust of Herennia Etruscilla right; legend HER ETRVSCILLA AVG. Reverse with Fecunditas standing, holding child and sceptre; legend FECVNDITAS AVG. Well-centred strike with clear legends and devices; light evidence of circulation. RIC IV (Trajan Decius) 56.

Issued for Herennia Etruscilla during the reign of Trajan Decius, this antoninianus employs the FECVNDITAS AVG type to promote dynastic continuity and imperial legitimacy through fertility and the production of heirs, a recurring theme in mid-third-century propaganda amid military pressure and rapid political instability.
