Description

Vespasian, denarius, AR, reign 69–79 AD, Rome mint, 69–70 AD, 3.21 g, 18 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Vespasian right; legend IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG. Reverse with legend COS I TER TR POT P, without accompanying reverse type indicated in the provided data. Well-centred strike with clear legends and portrait detail; surfaces consistent with circulation silver of the early Flavian period. RIC II (2nd edition), Vespasian 29.

Issued at the beginning of Vespasian’s reign following the civil wars of 69 AD, this denarius forms part of the early Flavian monetary output at Rome that publicised the new emperor’s titulature and legitimacy, reflecting the consolidation of imperial authority and the restoration of regular coinage after the instability of the Year of the Four Emperors.
