Description
Ptolemy X Alexander I & Cleopatra Berenice, tetradrachm, AR, joint reign 101–88 BC, Alexandria mint, 101–88 BC, 13.32 g, 29 mm. Obverse with diademed head of Ptolemy I right, in the traditional Ptolemaic dynastic style. Reverse with ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ around an eagle standing left on thunderbolt; typical Alexandrian fabric for the period. Well-centred and evenly struck, with clear legend and strong preservation of the principal devices. Svoronos 1682; SNG Copenhagen 371.
This Alexandrian tetradrachm belongs to the late Ptolemaic silver series that maintained the dynastic portrait of Ptolemy I as a legitimizing type for later rulers, here under the authority of Ptolemy X Alexander I and Cleopatra Berenice. The issue reflects the continued use of established royal iconography and titulature in Egypt’s principal mint during a period marked by dynastic instability, contested authority, and shifting court politics in the final century of Ptolemaic rule.
