Description

Celts of Northern Hungary & Southern Slovakia, drachm, AR, 2nd–1st centuries BC, 10.51 g, 18 mm. Well-centered strike with clear principal devices; surfaces with light circulation wear consistent with the issue. Reference: Kostur–Gášpár 203.

This drachm belongs to the late Celtic coinage of the Middle Danube region, reflecting the adaptation of Mediterranean monetary concepts into local production during the centuries preceding Roman political consolidation. The highly stylized iconography illustrates the transformation of earlier classical prototypes into distinctly regional artistic conventions, while the use of silver and the drachm standard indicates participation in broader networks of exchange across northern Pannonia and adjacent areas of the Carpathian Basin.
