Description
Celts of Northern Hungary and Southern Slovakia, Drachm, AR, 2nd–1st centuries BC, 2.22 g, 16 mm. Obverse with a stylized head right, rendered in abstracted linear forms typical of the “Karancs” series. Reverse with a stylized horse, similarly reduced to schematic elements, the design reflecting local Celtic reinterpretations of classical prototypes. Well-centered for the type, with clear principal devices on both sides and even metal. Rare. K&G 204.3.
This issue belongs to the late Celtic coinages circulating in the Carpathian Basin during the final centuries BC, a period marked by intensified regional exchange and increasing interaction with the monetary systems of neighboring Mediterranean and Danubian polities. The “Karancs” type represents the local development of silver drachms used in trade and payments across northern Hungary and southern Slovakia, illustrating both the spread of coin use among Celtic communities and the transformation of imported iconographic models into distinctive regional styles.
