Description

Celts of Northern Hungary and Southern Slovakia, drachm, AR, 2nd–1st centuries BC, uncertain mint, 10.11 g, 22 mm. Obverse with a head of Herakles in profile, in a locally rendered adaptation of Hellenistic prototypes; the portrait simplified in the Celtic manner with stylized hair and facial features. Reverse with a stylized Pegasus walking left, reduced to essential lines and forms typical of late Celtic abstraction. Well-centered on a broad flan with clear principal devices; minor softness in the highest points consistent with the issue. Reference: Pink S.59/60.

These Celtic drachms belong to the Danubian Celtic monetary tradition in the regions of present-day northern Hungary and southern Slovakia, where indigenous communities adopted and transformed Greek iconography—particularly Herakles and Pegasus—into distinct local types. The series reflects both participation in wider Mediterranean exchange networks and the development of regional political and economic structures in the later La Tène period, with silver coinage serving as a medium for trade and payments in the century preceding Roman consolidation in the area.
