Description
Vespasian, denarius, AR, reign 69–79 AD, Rome mint, struck AD 69–70, 3.22 g, 18 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Vespasian right; legend IMP CAES VESP AVG P M. Reverse with augural implements; legend AVGVR TRI POT. Well-centred strike with clear legends and devices; minor die wear consistent with the issue. RIC II (Vespasian, 2nd ed.) 43.
Struck at the outset of Vespasian’s reign following the civil wars of AD 68–69, this denarius belongs to the early Flavian restoration of imperial authority. The reverse type refers to priestly office and tribunician power, emphasizing Vespasian’s constitutional legitimacy and religious standing as he consolidated control of the empire and founded the Flavian dynasty.
