Description

Septimius Severus, denarius, AR, reign 193–211, Rome mint, struck 198–202, 2.41 g, 19 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Septimius Severus right; legend SEVERVS PIVS AVG. Reverse with ADVENT AVGG type, commemorating the imperial arrival; legend ADVENT AVGG. Well-centred strike with clear legends and principal devices; minor metal porosity and light circulation wear consistent with the issue. RIC IV Septimius Severus 248.

The ADVENTVS coinage of Septimius Severus forms part of the dynastic and military propaganda issued during the consolidation of the Severan regime after the civil wars of 193 and the subsequent eastern campaigns; the type publicizes the emperor’s ceremonial arrival and, with the plural AVGG, reflects the presentation of shared imperial authority within the Severan household, reinforcing legitimacy and continuity in the early third-century empire.
