Description
Domitian, denarius, AR, reign 81–96 AD, Rome mint, 3.21g, 19mm. Obverse with laureate head of Domitian right; legend CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS. Reverse with legend COS IIII, with the consulship title indicating Domitian’s fourth consulship. Well-centered on both faces with clear legends; minor die wear consistent with circulation. RIC II (2nd ed.), Vespasian 921.
Issued early in Domitian’s principate, this denarius reflects the continuity of Flavian dynastic presentation through the obverse titulature identifying him as the son of the deified Vespasian (“AVG F”). The reverse consulship formula served as an official dating mechanism and communicated the emperor’s accumulation of Republican magistracies within the imperial framework, a standard feature of Roman state coinage used to assert legitimacy and record public office.
