Description

Hadrian, denarius, AR, reign 117–138 AD, Rome mint, struck c. 134–138 AD, 2.99 g, 18 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Hadrian right; legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P. Reverse with inscription VOTA PVBLICA within laurel wreath. Well-centered strike with clear legend elements and wreath detail; minor surface marks typical of the issue. RIC II.3 (Hadrian) 2325–2330.

The VOTA PVBLICA reverse refers to public vows undertaken on behalf of the emperor and the Roman state, reflecting the formal religious obligations connected to imperial rule. Under Hadrian, such types document the integration of civic cult, public ritual, and loyalty to the princeps, and they form part of the coinage that communicated stability and continuity during his later tribunician and consular periods.
