Description

Philip I, Antoninianus, AR, reign 244–249 CE, Rome mint, 244–249 CE, 4.43 g, 22 mm. Obverse with radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip I right; legend IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG. Reverse showing the Adventus type with the emperor in military attire on horseback left, right hand raised in salute and holding sceptre, conveying the ceremonial arrival; legend ADVENTVS AVGG. Well-centred for the issue, with clear legends and devices and minimal weakness confined to the highest points. RIC IV Philip I 26.

The ADVENTVS AVGG reverse belongs to a wider imperial program that publicized the emperor’s ceremonial arrivals and the restoration of order through legitimate presence, here emphasizing the Augusti as a ruling college. For Philip I, whose accession followed the eastern campaign and a rapid transition of power in 244 CE, such types served to communicate continuity and acceptance at Rome and across the empire through an immediately recognizable civic and military iconography.
