Description

Postumus, antoninianus, AR, reign 261–269 AD, Lyon mint, 261–269 AD, 4.4 g, 22 mm. Obverse with radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; legend IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG. Reverse with Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae; legend MONETA ACG. Well-struck with clear legends and centrally placed types; minor die wear typical for the issue. RIC V (Postumus) 75.

Struck during the breakaway Gallic Empire, this antoninianus reflects Postumus’ effort to project legitimacy and administrative stability in the western provinces during the mid-3rd century crisis. The Moneta reverse type emphasizes control of the currency and the integrity of the mint, themes used to support confidence in state finances and the regular payment of troops and officials while imperial authority was contested across the Roman world.
