Description

Otacilia Severa, antoninianus, AR, Augusta under Philip I, AD 244–249, Rome mint, 5.01 g, 22 mm. Obverse with draped bust of Otacilia Severa right, legend OTACIL SEVERA AVG. Reverse with Pietas standing left, performing sacrifice over an altar and holding a box of incense, legend PIETAS AVGVSTAE. Well-centred and clearly legended; devices sharp with light, even circulation wear. RIC IV Philip I 130.

Otacilia Severa was elevated to Augusta during the reign of Philip I (AD 244–249), and her coinage formed part of the imperial presentation of dynastic stability and traditional Roman religious values. The PIETAS AVGVSTAE reverse type publicized pietas as an expected virtue of the imperial household, associating the empress with ritual observance and the maintenance of the pax deorum at a time when the mid-third century empire faced recurrent political and military pressures.
