Description
Nero, tetradrachm, AR, reign 54–68 AD, Alexandria, year uncertain, 12.11 g, 24 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Nero right; Greek legend ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ around. Reverse with Greek legend ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ, type otherwise uncertain from the recorded data. Well-centred strike with clear legend elements; surfaces consistent with Alexandrian billon/AR tetradrachm issues of the period. References uncertain; cf. RPC I (Alexandria, Nero) and Dattari/Savio for related Alexandrian tetradrachm series.
Alexandrian tetradrachms of Nero formed the principal large silver denomination for Roman Egypt and were produced within the closed Egyptian currency system administered from Alexandria. These issues reflect Nero’s imperial titulature in Greek for local circulation and are a primary source for provincial monetary practice, imperial presence in Egypt, and the continuation of Ptolemaic-weight silver traditions under Roman rule.
