Description
Nero, tetradrachm, AR, reign 54–68 AD, Alexandria, regnal year 12 (65/66 AD), 11.71 g, 24 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Nero right; legend ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ. Reverse showing the Alexandrian eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, head right; legend ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ with date L ΙΒ in field. Well-centred with clear legends and principal devices; struck on a broad flan. References: RPC I 5289.
Issued within the Alexandrian regnal-year dating system, this tetradrachm belongs to the large provincial silver coinage that functioned as the principal higher-denomination currency in Roman Egypt, a fiscally distinct imperial province. The dated reverse provides a fixed point in Nero’s reign (65/66 AD), illustrating the continued use of local monetary traditions under Roman authority and the integration of imperial portraiture with established Alexandrian types such as the eagle.
