Description

Philip II, as Caesar, antoninianus, AR, under Philip I, Rome mint, AD 244–247, 3.31 g, 22 mm. Obverse with radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip II right; legend M IVL PHILIPPVS CAES. Reverse with the type PRINCIPI IVVENT, showing Philip II standing left, holding a spear and a standard. Struck on a broad flan with centered legends; light circulation wear consistent with the issue. RIC IV Philip I 219.

Issued for Marcus Julius Severus Philippus II during his elevation as Caesar under his father, Philip I, this antoninianus reflects the mid-third-century practice of promoting dynastic continuity through public coinage. The PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS theme emphasizes the heir apparent as “prince of the youth,” a traditional title employed to project stability and legitimacy during a period of frequent military crises and rapid imperial turnover.
