Description

Antoninus Pius, denarius, AR, reign 138–161 AD, Rome mint, struck AD 151–152, 2.91 g, 18 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Antoninus Pius right; legend IMP CAES T AEL HADR ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P. Reverse with Pax standing left, holding branch and sceptre; legend TR POT XV COS IIII, with PAX in exergue. Well-centred strike on a compact flan, with clear legends and full major devices. RIC III Antoninus Pius 216a.

Struck during Antoninus Pius’ fifteenth tribunician year, this denarius belongs to the long mid-second-century phase marked by internal stability and consistent silver issues from Rome. The Pax reverse type reflects the regime’s public emphasis on civic order and the maintenance of peace, a central theme in Antoninus Pius’ imperial messaging and a standard iconographic statement in the Roman monetary system.
