Description
Menander I, drachm, AR, reign circa 155–130 BC, uncertain mint, 2.41 g, 16 mm. Obverse with diademed bust of Menander I to right, surrounded by the Greek legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ MENANΔPOY. Reverse with Athena Alkidemos advancing left, holding thunderbolt and shield, with the Kharoshthi legend Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa in the field. Well-centred strike with clear legends on both sides; minor die wear consistent with circulation. Bopearachchi 13O.
Menander I was one of the most prominent Indo-Greek rulers, and his bilingual drachms illustrate the administrative and commercial integration of Hellenistic and South Asian traditions in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent. The combined Greek and Kharoshthi inscriptions reflect a monetary system intended for multiple linguistic communities, while the Athena Alkidemos type continues a Macedonian royal iconography adapted for Indo-Greek use during a period of significant political and cultural exchange.
