Description
Menander I, drachm, AR, reign 155–130 BC, uncertain mint, 2.42 g, 16 mm. Obverse with diademed bust of Menander I to right; around, Greek legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ MENANΔPOY. Reverse with the standard Indo-Greek bilingual type; Kharoshthi legend Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa around. Lightly circulated with clear legends and principal devices remaining legible; minor weakness in strike in places consistent with the issue. Bopearachchi 16l.
Menander I is among the best-attested Indo-Greek rulers, and his silver drachms document the political and economic integration of Hellenistic and South Asian spheres. The bilingual Greek and Kharoshthi legends reflect the administrative realities of a multilingual kingdom and provide primary evidence for royal titulature, circulation networks, and cultural interaction across the northwestern Indian subcontinent during the mid-2nd century BC.
