Description
Antimachos II, drachm, AR, reign 174–165 BC, uncertain mint, 174–165 BC, 2.44 g, 15 mm. Obverse with Greek legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ NIKHΦOΡOΥ ANTIMAXOΥ naming the ruler; portrait type consistent with Indo-Greek royal drachms, the fields framed by the full titulature. Reverse with Kharoshthi legend Maharajasa jayadharasa Amtimakasa, presenting the corresponding royal titles in Prakrit. Lightly struck on a compact flan typical for the denomination; legends substantially present though dependent on strike and flan alignment. Bopearachchi 1C.
This drachm represents the bilingual monetary system of the Indo-Greek kingdoms, combining Greek and Kharoshthi scripts to circulate across culturally and linguistically diverse regions of the northwestern Indian subcontinent. The paired legends document royal titulature in both traditions and provide primary evidence for political authority, administrative reach, and the integration of Hellenistic and local practices during the mid-2nd century BC.
