Description

Menander I Soter, drachm, AR, reign 155–130 BC, uncertain mint, 2.34 g, 16 mm. Obverse with diademed bust of Menander I right; Greek legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ MENANΔPOY around. Reverse with bilingual legend in Kharoshthi, Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa, surrounding the standard Indo-Greek reverse type for this issue; devices and legend clear and well-centered for the type. Struck in good silver on a compact flan, with minor softness at the periphery consistent with the series. Bopearachchi 13O.

Menander I was one of the most prominent Indo-Greek rulers, and his bilingual coinage documents the political and economic integration of Hellenistic and local traditions in the northwestern Indian subcontinent. The pairing of Greek and Kharoshthi legends reflects a mixed administrative and commercial environment, while the consistent royal epithet “Soter” and its Kharoshthi equivalent “Tratarasa” provide primary evidence for royal titulature and propaganda in the Indo-Greek period.
