Description

M. Junius Brutus. 54 BC. AR Denarius (18 mm, 3.30 g, 3 h). Rome. Obv. BRVTVS, bearded head of L. Junius Brutus right. Rev. AHALA, bearded head of C. Servilius Ahala right. Babelon (Junia) 31; Crawford 433/2; Sydenham 907; RBW 1543. Struck during Brutus’ term as tresvir monetalis in 54 BC, this historically charged issue celebrates two heroic figures claimed as ancestral forebears of the Junii and Servilii. The obverse depicts L. Junius Brutus, the legendary founder of the Republic and first consul of 509 BC, revered for expelling the last Roman king, Tarquinius Superbus. The reverse shows C. Servilius Ahala, remembered for slaying the would-be tyrant Spurius Maelius in 439 BC and thus defending the Republican order. Issued a decade before the Ides of March, the type appears, in retrospect, almost programmatic in its emphasis on anti-tyrannical virtue. At the time, however, it formed part of the standard aristocratic practice of celebrating illustrious ancestors on the coinage, long before living portraiture became politically acceptable. An evocative denarius, rich in ideological meaning and foreboding historical resonance.
