Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding kentron in right hand and reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos. Rev. Light iridescent toning; small scuff on the reverse, otherwise about extremely fine. Ex CGB Sale 47 (2011), lot 31. Belonging to the classic mid-fifth century output of Syracuse, this elegant tetradrachm represents the mature form of the city’s traditional quadriga and Arethusa types. The slow quadriga on the obverse conveys stately dignity, while Nike crowns the victorious team in a gesture of divine favour. The ketos in the exergue is a charming maritime emblem, underscoring the city’s close relationship with the sea. The reverse shows a beautifully engraved Arethusa, here wearing a prominent pendant necklace that lends the portrait a refined and individual character. The surrounding dolphins create a rhythmic circular frame, at once decorative and symbolic of Syracuse’s maritime identity. An attractive and well preserved example of one of the most admired coinages of classical Sicily, enhanced by a delicate iridescent tone and a pleasing provenance.
