Description

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24.19mm 16.27gm 12h). Arados mint. Struck circa 325-323 BC (lifetime issue), early Group I. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on broad-backed throne (legs uncrossed, right arm extended with noticeable gap to thigh, palm outward-facing); AΛEΞANΔPOY to right, [Γ (gamma) in left field, A below throne]. Price 3303; Duyrat Group I (early series); cf. Newell reattributions. Fine (worn, some details obscured by striking and circulation, slightly off-center reverse).

Stylistic features (broad throne, wider portrait proportions, curved lion-skin outline under neck, straight arm with wide gap) distinguish from contemporary Tarsos issues and align with early Arados production, heavily influenced by Tarsos but distinct in minor details. Trace of gamma visible in left field; secondary mark below throne consistent with A (worn).
