Description
MARCUS AURELIUS as Caesar under Antoninus Pius, AD 139-161. AR Denarius (18 mm, 3.37 g, 6 h). Rome mint, struck AD 156-157 (Marcus’ 11-th tribunician year). AVRELIVS CAES ANTON AVG PII F – Bare head right. TR POT XI • COS II – Virtus (or Mars) standing left, holding spear in right hand. RIC III (Antoninus Pius) 473; BMCRE 964; Cohen 721; RSC Aurelius 721. Attractive mid-silver toning with deeper highlights in recesses; well-centred portrait, light porosity in the fields.
Struck four years before Marcus succeeded Antoninus Pius, this denarius reflects the careful grooming of the young heir as Rome’s future war leader. The legend stresses his tribunician power for the eleventh time (TR POT XI) and his second consulship, signalling full participation in state affairs while still formally subordinate to Pius. The reverse type—Virtus with spear and parazonium—announces martial readiness and moral courage, virtues Marcus would soon need on the northern frontiers. Thus the coin offers a snapshot of the Stoic philosopher-prince at a pivotal moment, poised between a long era of peace and the hard campaigns that would define his sole reign.
