Description

Theodosius II, 402-450. AV Semissis, Constantinople

Obverse: DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG Diademed and cuirassed bust of Theodosius facing right.

Reverse: VICTOR TIBЄR AVG (CONOB in exergue). Victory seated, inscribing votive promise on shield (XX/XXX)

RIC 246.

This interesting reverse highlights the promise of the emperor for another decade on the throne. XX/XXX is more properly understood as VOT XX MVLT XXX, which conveys a message of 'Vows kept for 20 years, may this continue through to 30 years'.
