SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, AD 193-211. AR Denarius (≈ 20 mm, 3.19g, 6 h). Rome mint, struck AD 203-204 (tribunician power XI).

Obv. SEVERVS PIVS AVG – Laureate head right. Rev. P M TR P XI COS III P P – Bonus Eventus standing left, pouring libation from a patera over a lighted altar and holding a cornucopia brimming with grain ears. RIC IV 195; RSC 633b (RSC “RCS” 6335). Light silver-grey tone with golden highlights in the recesses, well centred and sharply struck; minor traces of circulation

Struck on the eve of Septimius Severus’ decennalia celebrations, this denarius links the emperor’s secure rule with the state’s material prosperity. The reverse features Bonus Eventus, the personification of “good outcome,” sacrificing for Rome’s welfare while brandishing a cornucopia that promises abundant harvests. Coupled with Severus’ full pontifical and civic titles—pontifex maximus, tribunicia potestas XI, consul tertium, pater patriae—the scene assured citizens that military success in the recent Parthian campaign translated into both divine favor and tangible plenty at home. Thus the coin served as a pocket-sized manifesto of Severus’ claim to have restored Rome’s fortune after the turmoil of the late second century.
