Description
Vespasian, Denarius, AR, reign AD 69–79; Rome, AD 75. 3.24 g; 18 mm. Obverse: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; laureate head right. Reverse: PON MAX TR P COS VI; Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. Struck at Rome on the standard denarius module; typical die axis around 6 h. RIC II, Part 1 (2nd ed.) 774.
Issued in Vespasian’s sixth consulship, the titulature PON MAX TR P COS VI records his offices as Pontifex Maximus and holder of Tribunician power and dates the coin to AD 75. The Victory reverse belongs to the Flavian program that emphasized successful warfare and restored order following the Year of the Four Emperors, while Rome-mint denarii of this period underpinned imperial payments and circulated widely across the empire.
